An huge percentage of people who try the will power method fail, and by that I meant start smoking again. So what is the problem with will power alone? During Elliot wards conversation as he mentioned to the councilor that he had tried the lozengers, zyban, tablets and the patches several times and  wanted to try something different….. their expert advice was …… was try one again. The definition of insanity is very close to constantly repeating something that doesn’t work, if something isn’t working I would say try anything else! Elliot ward in the telephone conversation with the NHS quitline mentioned that Clive Bates director of ash says the smoker needs to be psycologically ready and asked about hypnosis or Accupunture. The response was again they have no scientific evidence to support them.  The biggest independent survey ever in stoping smoking ws ignored by one of the biggest organizations that spends millions of pounds promoting their services as people who can help smokers quit. The counsiler said that Nicotine replacement products double your success rate, Double your success rate. What does this really mean?Elliot Ward of the new scientist was informed that will power was 1% but with NRT that doubled…..  so lets think about it they are  98% unsuccessful… Now in recent adverts they are saying it triples you chances so if the facts are right they are 97% unsuccessful by their own estimation.Elliot said I would like to try hypnotherapy, for smoking there is no scientific evidence, was the response. After much persistence Ward of the new scientist was given the number of the British complementary medical association. He rang up and was told there was no therapist in his area, not even surrounding areas, the British complementary medical association only had 23 registered.  He tried 3 numbers all were unobtainable. NHS Quitline were not sharing life changing information. Did this independent organisations really not want smokers trying other methods? They could of given the number of  the International Guild of Professional Practitioners, hypnotherapy association, national council hypnotherapy or any other hypnotherapy organisation but they didn’t. One could say that they are making it difficult to seek alternative help why? Did you know that they are sponsored by pharmaceutical companies which manufactuer the products which by there own estimation according to said the new scientist are 98% unsuccessful or more recently 97% unsuccessful. So there promting the use replacement nicotine drugs which arguably don’t really work and certainly do not work long term.. So the quitlines stratergy is  put the same drug in that the smoker, exactly the same drug that is addictive in a way to help them stoping smoking.  Now you may know someone who has successfully stopped this way, and managed to kick the habit, but trust me they are the minority.  You can drink a half pint of guiness with a tea spoon, and a tiny glass  but I would recommend that if you like to drink a half of guiness to pick up the glass. Someone out there somewhere might be able to do it but there are more effective ways to do things, and it is my belief that it is the same with smoking cessation. For a drug to be approved to market the drug companies present information to the FDA the FDA panels examine the test results, they don’t do any testing, the look at the information presented from the drug companies. For a drug to be approved by the FDA they have to demonstrate that the drugs were generally safe, , and the approval for efficietncy is that after 6 weeks they had to show significantly better rates than placebo for 28 days, the fact that at the end of the year most were still smoking did not enter into the approval process, and the companies can put the results up after 6 weeks, and on occasions there were ties and links between the panels and the pharmaceutical companies looking for the go ahead. So you might say that the trials are financed and heavily influenced by the drug companies. If you ran a business with a success rating of 98% unsuccessful  would you be in business? I mentioned that we are going to look at the ways to quit smoking so the NHS quitline will no doubt recommend one of these. Niquitin Cq lozenges The uks largest company glaxosmithcline was critised by watchdog for misleading, and the advertising standards agency  said that  cq lozenges were misleading and exaggerated, the advert said it could triple your chances of success….They were trying to say they were 97% unsuccessful and the watchdog gave them a slap. Zyban In the first year that it was released in the first year 40 people died after taking it and thousands of others reported serious negative reactions. A study by Glaxo Wellcome (now glaxosmithcline) found that it was no more effective than gum or the patch, the exact results were not given as the study was sponsored by glaxosmithcline and her contract would not allow it. What is vital to success is that the person is psychological ready to quit, really wants to stop.  Many times if the hypnotherapist is competent and smart therapist  he or she  may say for example.  I’m not sure your ready to quit smoking If a part of them is fearful or has doubts or isn’t really sure, if they want to quit, or if they thinks it helps them in some way.  These are obstacles that should be removed before the hypnosis session.
